Marcus Brauchli, managing editor at The Wall Street Journal, resigned on Tuesday. He cited allowing new owner Rupert Murdoch to select a managing editor of his choosing as a reason for stepping down.

Brauchli was named managing editor of The Wall Street Journal in April of 2007, succeeding Paul Steiger, who had served as managing editor since 1991. Brauchli’s departure is not unexpected after Murdoch purchased Dow Jones in December, as new owners often make substantial changes.

Brauchli will stay on with News Corporation as a consultant, and will provide the company with direction on the possible launch of an Asian business news channel.
