Corporate Blogging: Public vs Private – Debbie Weil on the Roundtable

by Sarah Wurrey on July 18, 2008

We were delighted to welcome Debbie Weil to the Roundtable this week. Debbie is a blogging and social media consultant out of Washington, DC, and the author of The Corporate Blogging Book.  She joins us to discuss corporate blogging issues, creative marketing, and the latest addition to the BlogHer community.

Corporate BloggingThis article in the New York Times caught our attention this week. Are private, smaller companies having it a bit easier in terms of engaging in social media? We discuss all the issues when it comes to Fortune 500 companies joining the blogosphere and the social media conversation.  Debbie points out that private companies, more specifically, might have it a bit easier because they are not beholden to large groups of shareholders.

Creative Marketing – HBO is launching a new series, “Tru Blood,” about vampires. Where’s the social media angle, you ask? They’ve also launched a very creative social media campaign to promote the series, and we discuss their tactics. Debbie praises the use of a smaller, creative agency, as well as HBO’s ability to find the right audience that they would like to mobilize, which can be tricky.

Michelle Obama on BlogHer – BlogHer scored quite a big name to join their community heading into their conference this week. Michelle Obama has started up a blog on the community. We all applaud her effort, but Jen and Debbie both agree that the prose was rather “stumpy,” in that it sounded like it was written by, or least edited by, a press flack rather than Mrs. Obama herself. I point out that I like to see this use of social media, which has become quite a force in campaigning.
